As part of its week-long observance of Veterans Day, Pikes Peak Community College on Thursday will host public screenings of two documentaries with a twist.

The first, “Bomber’s Moon: Girls Beneath the Bomb” was done by local nonprofit From Mists of Time, which collects and preserves the stories, music and images of historic places, people and events. The documentary looks at the World War II bombings over Europe and Japan, with personal accounts from surviving women who were there and pilots who dropped the bombs.

One of the people featured prominently in the film is Colorado Springs resident Silke Sauppe, who was forced to join the Hitler Youth squad as a child in Germany during the war. She will be at the event and participate in a question-and-answer session afterward, along with Wayne Cash, a World War II 89th Infantry Division soldier, Vietnam evac nurse Mary Littlejohn and George Payton from Buffalo Soldier Living History.BombersLogo
The second documentary, “Buffalo Soldiers Forever,” explores the history of black soldiers who served on the frontier in the post-Civil War army.

The doors open at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Centennial Theater on the PPCC Centennial Campus, 5670 S. Academy Blvd. “Girls beneath the Bombs” airs at 5:30 p.m. and “Buffalo Soldiers Forever” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. The question-and-answer session starts at 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.
